Monkeys and swines (5:60)

“Say: Shall I announce to you something worse than that as a retribution with God? Those whom God has cursed and on whom He was angry and of those whom He made apes and swine and who served the transgressor (taghut). Those are in the worst position and more misguided from the right path.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:60]

قل هل أنبئكم بشر من ذلك مثوبة عند الله من لعنه الله وغضب عليه وجعل منهم القردة والخنازير وعبد الطاغوت أولئك شر مكانا وأضل عن سواء السبيل

Hasan Al-Askari (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “God commanded His servants, to ask Him for the way, of those on whom He showed mercy (1:7) and these are the prophets, truthful, martyrs and righteous and to take refuge with Him from the way, of those on whom there is wrath and these are the Jews about whom God said: ﴾Say: Shall I declare to you worse than retribution with God than this? The one whom God cursed and was angry with and from whom He made the apes and swine.﴿” (5:60) [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 2, page 488, Hadith 1]

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O people, whoever hated us the people of the House, God raises him up as a Jew who is not benefited by his Islam and when he meets the deceiver (Dajjal), he believes in him and when he dies, God raises him up from his grave until he believes in him.” [Mashariq-ul-Anwar of Al-Bursi, page 77, Hadith 3]

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported Imam As-Sajjad (a.): “Someone from the followers came in to him and said: ﴾O son of the Messenger of God, what preference do we have over our enemies, while we and they are the same. Much more is there anyone of them who is more beautiful, more disciplined and more odorous than we. So what advantage do we have over them?﴿ Then Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: ﴾Do you want me to show you your advantage over them?﴿ He said: ﴾Yes.﴿ He said: ﴾Approach me.﴿ So he approached him. Then he took hold of his beard, stroked his eyes, fanned his face with his hand and said: ﴾Look at what you see.﴿ Then he looked into the mosque of the Messenger of God (s.) and in it were only monkeys, swines, bear and lizard. So he said: ﴾My life be sacrificed to you, put me back as I was, for this sight is difficult.﴿ Then he stroked his eyes and put him back as he was. So that was part of his signs.” [Al-Hidayat-ul-Kubra by Al-Khusaibi, page 224, Hadith 2]

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that Imam As-Sajjad (a.) said: “Someone went to Ali (a.) and said: ﴾O Commander of the Believers, teach me about the mankind, those who resemble the mankind and the beasts.﴿ Ali (a.) said: ﴾O Hasan, answer him.﴿ Then Hasan (a.) said to him: ﴾You asked about the people. So the mankind are the Messenger of God (s.), for God says: “On this flows, where the people flowed.” (2:199) And we are from him and you asked about those who are like the mankind. So these are our followers and they are of us and resemble us and you asked about the beasts and these are the majority and this is the Word of God: “They are like cattle. Rather they are more misguided from the path.﴿ (25:44) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 24, page 94 – 95, Hadith 1]

Ali Ibn Abi Hamzah reported that Abu Basir said: “I went on pilgrimage with Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq). Now when we were making the circumambulation, I said to him: ﴾My life be sacrificed to you, O son of the Messenger of God. Does God forgive these beings?﴿ Then he said: ﴾O Abu Basir, the greater part of those whom you see are monkeys and swine.﴿” He said: “I said to him: ﴾Show them to me.﴿ So he spoke out words, whereupon he passed his hand over my sight. Then I saw them as he said. I said: ﴾Give back to me my sight.﴿ So I saw them as I saw them the first time.﴿ Then he said: ﴾O Abu Muhammad, you will rejoice in Paradise and search among the plains of fire. But you will not find. By God, not three of you will come together. No, by God, not two. No, by God, not one.﴿” [Dala’il-ul-Imamah of At-Tabari, page 282 – 283, Hadith 226]

Sadir As-Sairafi reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “For the Riser (Qa’im) there is a custom of Joseph.” I said: “It seems that you are mentioning some perplexity or concealment.” Then he said to me: “And what of this does this swine-like nation deny? The brothers of Joseph were tribes. Descendants of the prophets. They traded with Joseph and sold to him and spoke to him, while they are his brothers and he is their brother. But they did not recognise him until Joseph said: ﴾I am Joseph.﴿ (12:90) Now what does this accursed nation deny that God wants to hide His proof in a time of the times? Joseph had power over Egypt when there was a distance of eighteen days between him and his father. Had God willed to make His place known, He would have been able to do so. By God, at the good news Joseph and his descendants travelled from their dry land to Egypt in nine days and what does this nation deny that God does with His proof what He did with Joseph? That He goes to their markets and enters their carpets while they do not recognise Him until God allows Him to make Himself known to them as He allowed Joseph to do when He said: ﴾Did you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were foolish?﴿ (12:89) They said: ﴾Are you really Joseph?﴿ He said: ﴾I am Joseph and this is my brother.﴿” (12:90) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 51, Page 142, Hadith 1]

Kamil Sulaiman reported that Prophet Muhammad (s) said: “There will be fear in my nation. Then the people will go to their scholars. So behold, they are monkeys and swines all of a sudden. They are punished in the same way, as those who distorted the right in its viewpoint and falsified the word in its places. God transformed their appearances and distorted their nature, just as they exchanged the right for the wrong.” [Yawm-ul-Khalas of Al-Jaburi, page 473, Hadith 4.]
